The ONE Point

If Jesus realized that a point may be seen as a “beginning” or as an “interval,” but not as a defined whole, line or interval, then the question became: how many “beginnings” or “intervals,” which may be symbolized as (o), are necessary to define a point or to give it “actual being”? – that is, not to define the operative positive force itself, which may be said to correspond to the vertical line bisecting the horizontal diameter of a circle, but to define one point in the circle that the cross enfolds? Or, the equation may be put, simply: how many “intervals” (o) are required to draw the configuration of the positive sign (+), which appears as answer to the problem of the product of zero divided, and also defines a point?

Five “intervals,” (o), are the fewest that will satisfy this situation:


The number five, itself a spherical number, completely “houses” the one point defined. If five is the “measure” of one, defined, one cannot measure the same in every direction: in the figure above, both the vertical and the horizontal line “count” three intervals, but if they are “taken apart” one line will “inventory” more intervals than the other.

…The two smallest segments of a line that can exhibit one degree of difference and move to completely secure and reinforce one “corpuscle of light” must measure three intervals (o) in one segment, two “intervals” (o) in the other. As the three-interval segment moves perpendicular to the two-interval segment, the two-interval segment may divide and close against the three-interval segment as it passes through, thus securing and reinforcing its center point. This action may be symbolized:


Both segments perfectly share and equally sustain the one-interval that becomes a “corpuscle of light.”

The Arising of Christ-Consciousness


So from where does Christ-Consciousness arise? Preston Harold gets right to the point…

Christ-consciousness appears to be sent from the unconscious domain. Before this light can enter consciousness, something in man must be equal to its action: Jesus says the will (the energy) must be as the Father’s, as One’s. He insisted that He, the light, was sent into the world, and that He expressed the will or energy of the Father, unapparent save in man.

Harold says Christ-consciousness is SENT into “the world,” the conscious domain, from the realm of the unconscious, the “kingdom of heaven.” Harold then quotes Eddington in explaining how light comes into the physical world:

…the individual wave-systems in the sub-aether are composed of oscillations too rapid to affect our gross senses; but their beats are sometimes slow enough to come within the octave covered by the eye. These beats are the source of the light coming from the hydrogen atom, and mathematical calculations show that their frequencies are precisely those of the observed light from hydrogen. Heterodyning of the radio carrier waves produces sound: heterodyning of the sub-aetheral waves produces light. Not only does this theory give the periods of the different lines in the spectra, but it also produces their intensities – a problem which the older quantum theory had no means of tackling. It should, however, be understood that the beats are not themselves to be identified with light-waves; they are in the sub-aether whereas light-waves are in the aether. They provide the oscillating source which in some way not yet traced sends out light-waves of its own period.


Harold comments on the difference between the beats and the light-waves being identical to Jesus’ understanding of His relationship to the Father:

An ancient who referred to himself as Light – and of the same “period” as the Father of all manifestation, God – might try to make clear that the “beats” in the “sub-aether” (or that unapparent source) are not to be identified with Himself, and that it is their action that produces the phenomenon, by saying: “I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.”

Perfect! Jesus’ awareness of himself as “light” shows the dwelling of Christ-consciousness within Him. Just as physical light is sent into the world from the aether, so Jesus’ awareness of Himself as light makes Him aware of being “sent” from the Father, or the beats in the sub-aether. Jesus, Symbol of h


Preston Harold takes us inside the world of the atom and tells us the same rules apply inside the world of mankind. He lets Jesus be our guide:

Jesus’ words bespeak the uniform chance of energy – the energy of one. He said, “lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age.” And His words must also indicate that something within – the atom and the man – must make itself equal to one, to h, before the light or the quantum can enter. As Eddington puts it:

The mysterious quantity h crops up inside the atom as well as outside it….the electrons orbit is restricted to a definite series of sizes and shapes. There is nothing in the classical theory of electro-magnetism to impose such a restriction; but the restriction exists, and the law imposing it has been discovered. It arises because the atom is arranging to make something in its interior equal to h. The intermediate orbits are excluded because they would involve fractions of h and h cannot be divided.

But there is one relaxation. When wave-energy is sent out from or taken into the atom, the amount and period must correspond exactly to h. But as regards its internal arrangements the atom has no objection to 2h, 3h, 4h, etc.; it only insists that fractions shall be excluded…

…when the atom by radiating sets the aether in vibration, the periods of its electronic circulation are ignored and the period of the aether-waves is settled not by any particular mechanism but by the seemingly artificial h-rule. It would seem that the atom carelessly throws overboard a lump of energy which, as it glides into the aether, moulds itself into a quantum of action by taking on the period required to make the product of energy and period equal to h. If this unmechanical process of emission seems contrary to our preconceptions, the exactly converse process of absorbtion is even more so. Here the atom has to look out for a lump of energy of the exact amount required to raise an electron to the higher orbit. It can only extract such a lump from aether-waves of a particular period – not a period which has resonance with the structure of the atom, but the period which makes the energy into an exact quantum.

So what does it all mean? Harold tells us how Jesus interprets Eddington’s statement:

If h could speak, it must say to all atoms, as Jesus, symbol of h, said to all men, that unless within themselves they accept its own “name and being”-become equal to it-they cannot receive light, for “I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you….” so that one’s operation itself determines the seemingly artificial h-rule or Jesus’ “I” rule.


So our spiritual/scientific rule here is “h=I.” Enjoy the applicational possibilities! Until next time, peace.

Paying the Piper


In answer to the previous post’s question, Preston Harold once again quotes Sir Arthur Eddington at length…

Attempts to account for this phenomenon follow two main devices which we may describe as the ‘Collection-box” theory and the “sweepstake” theory, respectively. Making no effort to translate them into scientific language, they amount to this: in the first the atom holds a collection-box into which each arriving group of waves pays a very small contribution; when the amount in the box reaches a whole quantum, it enters the atom. In the second [theory] the atom uses the small fraction of a quantum offered to it to buy a ticket in a sweepstake in which the prizes are whole quanta; some of the atoms will win whole quanta which they can absorb, and it is these winning atoms in our retina which tell us of the existence of Sirius…

A phenomenon which seems directly opposed to any kind of collection-box explanation is the photoelectric effect. When light shines on metallic films…free electrons are discharged from the film. They fly away at high speed, and it is possible to measure experimentally their speed or energy. Undoubtedly it is the incident light which provides the energy of these explosions, but the phenomenon is goverened by a remarkable rule. Firstly, the speed of the electrons is not increased by using more powerful light. Concentration of the light produces more explosions but not more powerful explosions. Secondly, the speed is increased by using bluer light, i.e. light of shorter period….

Every electron flying out of the metal has picked up just one quantum from the incident light. Since the h-rule associates the greater energy with the shorter vibration period, bluer light gives the more intense energy. Experiments show that (after deducing a constant “threshold” energy used up in extricating the electron from the film) each electron comes out with a kinetic energy equal to the quantum of incident light.

The film can be prepared in the dark; but on exposure to feeble light electrons immediately begin to fly out before any of the collection-boxes could have been filled by fair means. Nor can we appeal to any trigger action of the light releasing an electron already loaded up with energy for its journey; it is the nature of the light which settles the amount of the load. The light calls the tune, therefore the light must pay the piper.

Harold then comments:

An ancient could convey all of this only by making a symbol of himself to show it. Jesus “radiated” His realization to speed the expansion of consciousness in a brief, intense effort – as symbol of light, “bluer, of shorter period.” As light’s symbol, having settled the amount of the load on the elect-ones, He, Himself, paid the piper. But there is more to the story of h and to the parallel that Jesus’ drama presents.

Light’s Single Action

We will delve right into Preston Harold’s statements regarding Jesus and h:

…if an ancient were trying to state the case of h, how could he have done it? If he could utter but one word to give evidence of his grasp of h, then that word must be, “single,” singularity expressed in such a way that it would be true at every way. Jesus said: “The light of the body is in the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” These poetic words reflect light’s single action, relate light and singular behavior in its absorption – and they also present truth in another field: strangely enough surgeons now know that the cornea is the single bit of flesh that may readily be transplanted and truly grow into man’s body, so that its singularity bespeaks the sameness of one.

One can’t help but think here also of the “third eye,” also known as the ajna chakra in Hindu philosophy. The effects of this eye becoming active are a sense of oneness and connection amongst everything, therefore reinforcing the concept of singularity.


But Jesus, Himself, had to symbolize h, the one atom of action that coheres as one unit in the process of radiation, single (as He remained), an indivisible likeness to One, bespeaking a unity that overleaps space, a unity He called the same, without reservation, in every man for each hath one. He could do no more than present a clue as to the dimension of His realization – He did not attempt to state it in full: I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” How could His disciples bear to generations unborn more than poetry of the quantum, enveloped in Jesus’ drama and in the one singularly expressed reference to light’s absorption. How is it managed?

Reconciling Science and Religion, Part 3


But as important as the second law of thermodynamics is to scientists, the study of energy, of light, is of first importance. Jesus appears to have seen that the secret of the universe must rest in light, primordial energy, and that in the creation of light rests the secret of creation itself. If He realized the nature of it, He must tell its story in large drama because prime energy, or elementary particle, cannot be identified and is not an individual. In making Himself a symbol of light in order to reveal its nature, and in being a symbol of saving grace in man, He took care to insure that someday men would realize His revelation was of universal truth. This is to say, He did not forget to enfold in the being of all humankind the primordial energy of God that He represented…for to the multitudes before Him, Jesus said:

“…you are the light of the world…”

From a scientific point of view, what is light? Is it a wave or is it a particle? It is actually both, depending on how we observe it. Notice what Preston Harold said above: “elementary particle…is not an individual.” Just this past week the first visual representation of actual light as both wave and particle has been documented. Here is a brief summary:

Please note how quantum theory, part of the “new physics” comes into play in this situation. Preston Harold says:

To evaluate Jesus’ revelation of the law upon which the universe operates and its psychic parallel, and to appreciate His dramatization of light, one must attempt to grasp, at least in some small measure, some of the basic ideas of the new physics. The relationship between science and psychology, which today largely substitutes for religion, cannot be determined by exploring only one realm or the other. To make the acquaintance, to have at least a nodding and speaking acquaintance, with the doctrine of science, psychology, and religion is incumbent upon [modern] man.

Just as light is neither particle or wave but rather both particle and wave, we as humanity can no longer approach meaning using either science or religion/psychology but rather both science and religion/psychology.

Either/Or is out the door.

Both/And is where we land.

But it takes some work on ourselves to “repent,” to change our way of thinking. Preston Harold continues…

To attempt to grasp in small measure some of the basic data of the new physics is not an easy task. And to see in the working of the physical world something of a mirror-reflection of the operation of man’s psyche might strike many as being too far-fetched to give the subject much consideration. A question must also arise – how could Jesus have known anything of physics in today’s sense of the word? His realization arose from the unconscious…. Aniela Jaffe says:

“The parallelism between nuclear physics and the psychology of the collective unconscious was often a subject of discussion between Jung and Wolfgang Pauli…The space-time continuum of physics and the collective unconscious can be seen, so to speak, as the outer and inner aspects of one and the same reality behind appearances.”

If only Hyacinth Bucket was aware of the reality from which appearances arise! Richard’s, Emmet’s, and the Vicar’s lives would have been so much simpler!


Now that we’ve thought about light a bit we will return to the second law of thermodynamics. To prep us for chapter 6, we will listen to Preston Harold’s last words of chapter 5:

This study does not attempt to show that Jesus precisely formulated the secondary law of physics – rather that His words and drama are congruent with the physicists’ explanations of these laws… Jesus’ view of the cosmic significance of nature’s supreme law differs from the nihilistic view of many scientists, disputed in some circles, but His descriptions of its working harmonize with those given for the layman. Jesus must speak to a world wherein even among the learned there was no language or mathematics to couch His realizations if they were as advanced as their congruence with scientific data indicates. Thus, He must be a poet, or in drama show nature’s operation that He grasped – and to be congruent with today’s science, His words must be as enigmatic, contradictory, yet true, as are the secondary laws of physics versus the classical, or as is the wave theory versus the quantum theory of light.

With that we are ready to tackle chapter 6 and how Jesus’ poetic and dramatic ministry expressed truth for the listeners in His day to the same extent that science and math express truth abstractly through numbers and data for modern mankind. Until next time, peace.


It’s time for the last of our 3 foci, “the objective.”

To understand the objective of THE SHINING STRANGER, we will all have to become poets.  But what exactly is a poet?  Of all the definitions I’ve heard, I enjoy Dr. Cornel West’s the most:

The great (Percy) Shelly used to say that ‘poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.’ What did he mean by that?  He wasn’t talking about versifying.  To be a poet in the most profound sense is to have the courage to release your imagination and your empathy…


True poetry is full of contradictions, paradox, mystery, conundrums, and riddles.  Many people say the Bible cannot be trusted because it contains many contradictions.  Others say “if the Bible says it, it must be so,” and can’t see any meaning beyond the plain sense of the text.  Both sides are barking up the wrong tree.  Harold says…

Dr. Henry A Murray writes that an “important fact not generally acknowledged is…the Bible is poetry, in its best parts, magnificent and edifying poetry….Some devout Christians overlook the fact that the stirring and sustaining power of the Book they live by depends on the wondrous emotive language, the vivid imagery and figures of speech, with which its wisdom is transmitted….If the New Testament…had been written by a modern social scientist in the jargon of his profession, it would have died at birth.”


As does (George) Santayana, Dr. Murray sees that the playing down of the “crucial import of the Bible’s poetry,” hand in hand with the playing up of its historicity, is the greatest fallacy of Christianity, for thereby the scope of its traffic with and judgement of reality is severely limited.  Poetry does not obscure fact – it presents it in words that act as leaven in the mind to make room for it to house there.  Poetry is dazzling in its completely open and full use of words that have, as John Ciardi puts it: “…far more meanings than anyone thinks about in reading factual prose.  A word is not a meaning but a complex of meanings consisting of all its possibilities: its ability to identify something, the image it releases in making that identification, its sound, its history, its associations-in-context…” (emphases mine)

Plato equated poetry with creation: “All creation or passage of non-being into being is poetry or making.”  Poetry comes from the subconscious, and Harold sees in Jesus the universe’s Poet Laureate…

Jesus spoke poetically, but if His words are true they must be a correct, albeit poetical, description of reality.

Until a man has grasped the full implication of Jesus’ words, “the kingdom of God is within you,” he cannot begin to understand Him.  His every word is predicated upon this revelation.  It is the woking of the inner kingdom He reveals.  If the kingdom of heaven is within, there is no heavenly place of the abode for the “redeemed” to go – the realm of heaven is now an individual state of being, a potential mankind shall in time realize.  It is inward reality as opposed to the outward illusiveness of life (and of matter, which Jesus proclaimed long before the physicists discovered it).

Jesus saw life to be infinite, saw that man’s religions form one-to-one correspondences of truth, and that each man is a one-to-one correspondence with God, truth, life, and with each other man.

Jesus saw the Ten Commandments as classical psychic law.  He realized, however, that quantum psychic law underlies the classical law, and this secondary law governs the inner, real life of the individual – this is the law he enunciated.

In saying that the kingdom of God, an unknown realm, is within each person, Jesus proclaimed the existence of that psychic reality now called the unconscious – revealed its working and power.  He made of Himself a symbol of the Authority within this psychic realm: the vital Self-of-selves abstracted from consciousness for which man yearns – which is unto each his own, “the Lord, your God.”

Jesus strove to heal the breach in man’s thinking upon reality, strove to rejoin the divided physical and spiritual realms, saying, poetically, that the energy which gives life to man is, potentially, in a “stone.”  Identifying Himself and mankind with primordial energy, light, He dramatized and phrased in poetic terms the most important of the secondary laws of physics, enfolding His answer to the question of the universe in the sign positive (+)….whether by design or because he knew how to tap the fount of truth in His unconscious, He presented in drama, symbol, and poetry the underlying physical and psychic laws that are today being revealed.

From these observations Harold derives the objective of THE SHINING STRANGER:

The objective, then,  is not to present one or several new aspects, but rather a whole new concept of Jesus, for, as Albert Schweitzer points out, “What has been passing for Christianity during these nineteen centuries is merely a beginning, full of weaknesses and mistakes, not a full-grown Christianity springing from the spirit of Jesus.”

One here is reminded of GK Chesterton’s quote: “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried.”
