Every Good Book Has a Spine

Following on from my last post, it’s time to determine under what conditions “the book” may be open and read.  The Book of Revelation tells us that in order for the book to be read, one must be found “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break it’s seals.”  So, the “seals” must be broken in order for the “scroll” to be read.  Who is found worthy to break the seals?  We are told…

And I began to weep bitterly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it.  Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep.  See, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals. Then I saw… a Lamb… having seven horns and seven eyes….  He went and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who was seated on the throne.  -Rev. 5:2-7

(Please note that in this individual the Lion and the Lamb coexist; they “lie down together.” Have you ever noticed that?)

After the Lamb has taken the scroll, he then begins not opening the scroll itself, but rather the seven seals one at a time, with each ceremonial opening bringing with it remarkable results.  No actual reading of the scroll actually happens after opening the seven seals.  The point being that opening the seven seals and experiencing its results is synonymous with reading the scroll itself. 

Let’s look further at the seals themselves, these “force-centres wherein radiates the formative force of the Logos,” and that run along “the cerebrospinal axis and the great sympathetic (nervous) system,” as J.M. Pryce has already shared with us.

In the East, these force-centres are known as “Chakras,” or wheels, and they lie dormant along the spine until the great work of initiation is undertaken.  In order for these chakras to be activated (or seals to be open), a force that lays dormant in the bottom of each person’s spine must be roused out of its slumber.  This force is commonly known in the East as the Kundalini, or “Serpent Power,” and guided properly, it is a source of spiritual awakening.  Once the Kundalini begins to arise from the base of the spine, it moves up the axis, activating each seal as it passes through it.

Do we get a hint of Kundalini anywhere in the Bible? Yes!  In the Old Testament the most obvious reference is in the 21st Chapter of the Book of Numbers when the Israelites, due to their impatience, are being bitten by “fiery serpents” in the wilderness.  They ask Moses to “pray to the LORD to take away the serpents from us.”  But rather than doing away with the serpents, the LORD tells Moses to “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.”  And sure enough, whenever an Israelite would be bitten, he or she would look at the bronze serpent Moses made and live.  So why didn’t the LORD just do away with the serpents like He was asked?  Because the serpents are necessary!  Each person has their own serpent within, and the bites refer to the premature arousal of the powerful electrical kundalini energy which can cause mental and physical harm.  Why looking upon a serpent on a pole was the cure is a mystery, but the best that I can do is suggest it is a homeopathic cure, using the source of the illness itself as a cure.  The pole represents the human spine, and the bronze serpent the kundalini power rising up it’s axis.

Jesus follows up on this story in the Gospel of John when he likened the “Son of Man” to the serpent that must be lifted up:

And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. -John 3:14

So here it seems we have pretty solid connections among the concepts of serpent, Son of Man, and healing.  In Christian tradition, Jesus has long been known as the great healer and master physician, healing us from the sickness of sin.  I’d like to suggest that if we can each lift up our own Son of Man within us, we will each be healed, that is, be made whole or holy, having the image of God in us fully restored.  Is it any wonder that our medical profession uses a caduceus as a representative symbol of their work of healing and restoration?

It DOES remind you of that Eastern Chakra/Kundalini concept, right?

Of course the source of all this spiritual experience and power dwells in our unconscious, concurrent with Preston Harold’s proclamation.  Our chakras are dormant and our Son of Man lies in wait for us to lift up.  But what happens when we begin to explore the Kingdom of Heaven within us?  In our next post we will look at the gains and losses that are experienced when the cerebrospinal seals are open, for in order to gain the Kingdom of Heaven, we have to let go the kingdom of the world.  Until then, peace…
